The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can witness one of the oldest of nature’s rituals; turtle nesting and hatching. From the 1st of November to the end of February, the giant leatherback and loggerhead turtles come ashore on the beaches to lay their eggs. The opportunity to be part of this is magical and a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
During the months of June through to November, Humpback whales pass along the coastline of the Elephant Coast and St Lucia during their annual migration from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic, past South Africa, to breed and calve off the coasts of Mozambique and Madagascar. On a whale watching tour, you can expect to see these magnificent creatures, as well as dolphins, in their natural habitat.
Birds are a vital indicator of the health of an ecosystem. 13181 birds were noted in 17 areas of the St Lucia Lake, including 2599 white pelicans and 34 African fish eagles.
