Not only is Hluhluwe Mfolozi one of Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserves, it’s also the most famous of Natal’s reserves. This World Heritage site is not to be missed. Expect to enjoy amazing views of Lake St Lucia, the Atlantic Ocean as well as the multi-coloured sand dunes. You can view the rhinoceroses, hippos, waterbuck, kudu, hyenas, leopards, zebra, and a variety of birds. You can drive through iSimangaliso using your own vehicle, or alternatively, book a guided tour through the park.
During the months of June through to November, Humpback whales pass along the coastline of the Elephant Coast and St Lucia during their annual migration from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic, past South Africa, to breed and calve off the coasts of Mozambique and Madagascar. On a whale watching tour, you can expect to see these magnificent creatures, as well as dolphins, in their natural habitat.
Birds are a vital indicator of the health of an ecosystem. 13181 birds were noted in 17 areas of the St Lucia lake, including 2599 white pelicans and 34 fish eagles.
